On Thursday, June 2, 2016 The Barrie Police Auxiliary Unit will be celebrating 40 years of service. To kick-off the celebration the Barrie Police vehicles have been outfitted with a “Barrie Police Auxiliary 40th Anniversary” decal and Auxiliary members have had a new crest added to their uniforms.
In 1976, 15 members formed the Barrie Police Auxiliary Unit. Prior to that year, these members were governed by the County of Simcoe and were Auxiliary Police officers for the Simcoe County Emergency Measures Organization.
The structure of the Auxiliary Unit parallels our front-line uniform platoons. The unit consists of an Inspector, Staff Sergeant and three Sergeants who oversee 26 active members. This Auxiliary Unit has become a critical part of the Barrie Police Service, and supports our Operational Services in many ways, including:
- Patrol escorts
- Traffic Control
- Crowd Control
- Community-based policing
- Crime prevention initiatives
- R.I.D.E program assistance
- Emergency callouts
Our Auxiliary members have worked and trained hard to become a core member of our service. They were all selected on the basis of their ability to complete the required testing, training program and their availability for service throughout the year. Their dedication and support to our service has been tremendous, and is reflected by the thousands of hours of volunteer work they provide our service each year.
To celebrate 40 years of service, the Barrie Police will be featuring past and present Auxiliary members, including one of the original members beginning in March through until June.
On Rogers Television, Thursday March 31, 2016 our Auxiliary Unit will be featured on “10-8 with Barrie Police". The week of May 16, 2016 our Auxiliaries will be featured during Police Week at the Georgian Mall, in the City of Barrie.
On Thursday, June 2, 2016, the Barrie Police Service would like to invite members of the community and the media to attend Barrie City Hall at 7:00 p.m. for a ceremony commemorating our Auxiliary Officers.
