Barrie Police Arrest and Charge Two Men and One Youth with Child Pornography

Members of the Barrie Police Service Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit have made three separate arrests following lengthy investigations related to online exploitation of children.

The three unrelated investigations began in 2016 and resulted in the execution of five search warrants and the seizure and forensic examination of seventeen (17) devices resulting in the arrest of two men and one youth.

A summary of the investigations, involved persons and charges laid are as follows:

  • On April 27, 2017, a 16-year-old Midland male was arrested following a child pornography investigation. The investigation commenced in June of 2016 after police received a CyberTip concerning an upload of child pornography via an online gaming program, commonly referred to as “Minecraft”.  As a result two (2) production orders and two (2) search warrants were executed, and subsequently eight (8) devices were seized. Police charged the 16-year-old male with Possession of Child Pornography. The accused was later released from a bail hearing and will return to court on May 30, 2017.
     
  • On May 3, 2017, a 52-year-old Barrie male was arrested following a child pornography investigation. The investigation commenced in November of 2016 after Investigators received an anonymous tip concerning a male suspected of being in possession of child pornography. As a result two (2) search warrants were executed, and subsequently eight (8) devices were seized, which revealed over 700 images of child pornography.  Police charged the 52-year-old male with Possession of Child Pornography. He was held for a bail hearing and later remanded.
     
  • On May 3, 2017, a 44-year-old Barrie male was arrested following a child pornography investigation. The investigation commenced in October of 2016 after a found cell phone was turned into police. An attempt to locate the owner’s details the officer inadvertently discovered an image of child pornography. Investigators obtained a search warrant that authorized a forensic analysis that resulted in additional content deemed to be child pornography. Police charged the 44-year-old male with Possession of Child Pornography. He was held for a bail hearing and later remanded.
     

The Barrie Police Internet Child Exploitation Unit is a partner within Ontario’s “Provincial Strategy” to protect children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the internet.  This project has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
