Investigative Services

Highlights

Investigative Services is comprised of general and specialized investigative units that each support the front-line operations with unique training and skills. These units offered support to numerous investigations throughout 2022 with some of the most notable listed below.

On November, 19, 2021 a 17-year-old male was shot and killed at his home address. The Major Crime and Homicide Unit took over the investigation from the front-line and within 48 hours one 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds were charged with first degree murder.

On Sunday August 28 at approximately 2 a.m., while conducting a missing persons investigation, uniformed officers located a vehicle in a large hole at a construction site in the middle of McKay Road. Unfortunately, all six missing young people had perished and the Major Crime and Homicide Unit took over the investigation from the front-line. After a complex investigation a construction company was charged with six counts of criminal negligence causing death.

On July 22, 2022 the Barrie Police Fraud Unit successfully arrested a 24-year-old Quebec man with several fraud-related charges including fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Investigators estimate that victims had lost up to $90,000 in this grandparents scam over the one-week time period before his arrest. The Fraud Unit continues to provide educational awareness to the community and work with citizens to prevent these types of frauds from happening.
