On Saturday, June 3, 2023, another unsanctioned truck rally came to Barrie and upwards of 500 people and 150 trucks began to assemble on the north side of the Georgian Mall parking lot near the location of the former Sears store.

This event saw participants and curious onlookers arrive from destinations as far away as Muskoka, Durham Region and parts of the GTA.

What started as a gathering of truck enthusiasts shortly after 6:00 p.m., quickly evolved into a chaotic scene of disrespect and total disregard for private property as a number of trucks, some of which were trailered to the parking lot area, began to do what is referred to brake stands, burn outs and peel outs. This activity created large plumes of smoke as burning rubber quickly filled the air and left visible marks on the parking lot surface.

Officers from the Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit were on scene monitoring the ever-growing crowd and their illegal activity. As some vehicles left, police were able to stop them on Bayfield Street where infractions were laid which included Unnecessary Noise and No Muffler – Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

During the night, curious onlookers were seen climbing onto nearby construction equipment and some people were seen observing from the roof of the mall.

This unauthorized event concluded shortly after midnight with trucks, attendees and curious on-lookers leaving the area. Although no one was injured, the careless actions of many involved could have resulted in serious injuries as police observed not only the dangerous activity of the pickup truck drivers, but there were also a number of dirt bikes being operated by people without helmets.

The Barrie Police Service does not condone this unsafe, damaging activity and where possible, will hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
