Dr. Cynthia Lum, Ph.D.

George Mason University

Dr. Cynthia Lum is Distinguished University Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at George Mason University and Director of GMU’s Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy. She is a leading authority on evidence-based policing, an approach that advocates that research, evaluation, and scientific processes should have “a seat at the table” in law enforcement policymaking and practice. Lum has studied and written extensively about patrol operations and police crime prevention activities, police technology, investigations and detective work, and evidence-based crime policy. Additionally, she has developed numerous tools and strategies to translate and institutionalize research into everyday law enforcement operations. Dr. Lum is an appointed member of the National Academies of Sciences Committee on Law and Justice, an appointed trustee to the Council on Criminal Justice, and a board director for the National Policing Institute. She is the Editor in Chief of Criminology & Public Policy, the society’s flagship policy journal, and the founding Editor in Chief of Translational Criminology MagazineProfessor Lum is a former police officer and detective.

Sergeant Terry Cherry

Sergeant Terry Cherry has been with the Charleston Police Department in Charleston, South Carolina since 2012 and currently serves in the patrol -division. In 2020, SPO Cherry was selected as an NIJ LEADS scholar and was the recipient of IACP’s 40 under 40.

She served on the working group for the National Policing Institute’s Council for Police Reforms and Race and is an active National Policing Institute Fellow. Sergeant Cherry is recognized as a national expert in police recruitment and retention and has been published in various academic journals, IACP Police Chief Magazine, and Police1. Sergeant Cherry holds a BA from UCLA, an MBA from Pepperdine University, and is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Public Administration from Valdosta State University.
