On Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 7:21 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Mapleview Drive East and Welham Road in the city of Barrie.

Upon arrival, police observed that an involved motor vehicle was partially submerged in a pond located on the southeast corner of the intersection.

From the investigation that followed, police have learned that an eastbound motor vehicle entered the intersection against a red light at a high rate of speed and struck a motor vehicle that was in the intersection attempting to complete a left turn onto Welham Road. The resulting impact caused the eastbound car to veer into the pond. Although there were no injuries sustained, both of the involved motor vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The driver of the eastbound passenger car, a 38-year-old male from Barrie, has been charged with Careless Driving and Drive While Under Suspension.

Traffic in the area was impacted as the intersection was closed for approximately one and a half hours to allow police to safely investigate the collision and to allow tow trucks to remove the involved motor vehicles.

As the intersection was reopening just after 9:00 p.m., another collision occurred approximately 300 meters west of the initial crash scene after a stopped vehicle was rearended by a male operating a pickup truck. As police arrived at the scene, the driver of the pickup was observed exhibiting signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. The other driver was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The 39-year-old male from Barrie was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where a qualified breathalyzer operator determined his blood alcohol concentration was in excess of the legal limit and as a result, he was charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – Over .80mgs.

This driver has had his driver’s licence suspended for 90-days and his pickup truck has been impounded for seven days in accordance with the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension program. He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on June 26, 2023.
