On Monday, August 21, 2023, at 8:59 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of a possible impaired driver who was leaving a Bayfield Street fast food establishment.
As police were arriving on scene, the involved motor vehicle was observed exiting a parking lot, south of Cundles Road West, and travelling southbound on Bayfield Steet.
An attempt was made to safely stop the fleeing motor vehicle, but the driver was able to swerve through traffic and enter the southbound lanes of Highway 400. In the interest of public safety, and concerned by manner in which the vehicle was being operated, police stopped following the vehicle.
As the investigation continued, Barrie Police learned that the involved motor vehicle was stolen, and that the driver was at an address in Newmarket. York Regional Police was notified, and they attended the residential address and arrested the driver.
The now accused, a 27-year-old male from Port McNicoll, Ontario, was returned to Barrie and has been charged with:
- Drive motor vehicle, no plates
- Flight from peace officer
- Operation while prohibited
- Drive while under suspension
- Failure to comply with release order
- Theft of motor vehicle.
He has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear later today, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie for a bail hearing.
