On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, shortly after 10:00 a.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service observed a motor vehicle being operated at an extremely high rate of speed on Burton Ave. The vehicle left the roadway, collided with some fencing, returned to Burton Ave., where it travelled a short distance, with two flat front tires.
The driver stopped a short distance away and after a brief struggle, was taken into custody by police. At that time, police also observed that the 34-year-old male driver from Barrie exhibited signs of impairment. He was then transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.
As a result of this ongoing investigation, and after tests were conducted by a qualified breathalyzer technician, police were able to confirm that the driver was impaired. He was also found to be in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine.
The accused has been charged with Dangerous Operation, Obstruct Peace Officer (resist), Impaired Operation, Operation while impaired (80mg and above), Possession of a Schedule I Substance (cocaine) and Fail to comply with undertaking. He has been held in custody and is scheduled to have a bail hearing today by video with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
