A motor vehicle travelling southbound on Essa Road at 2:30 a.m. this morning caught the attention of a Barrie Police officer as it made a turn onto Fairview Road.

The driver accelerated onto Fairview Road after initially hesitating for an advance green light and in doing so, spun the tires on his car which caused a loud squealing sound. The driver then began to drive in the northbound lanes of Fairview Road while travelling southbound before pulling into a nearby plaza.

The driver, who was visibly impaired, was arrested and taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued. The 22-year-old male from Qunite West Ontario refused to cooperate with police and would not provide a sample of his breath when asked to do so by a qualified breathalyzer operator.

Police have charged the male with:

  • Drive motor vehicle – Perform stunt
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Drive motor vehicle – no licence
  • Having care or control of a motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Failure to comply with release order (2 counts).

He has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear this afternoon for a bail hearing, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie. The motor vehicle he was operating has been impounded for seven days as a result of both the stunt driving charge and refusing to comply with a demand for a breath sample.
