Impaired driver strikes house

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 7:11 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service, Barrie Fire and Emergency Services and the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services responded to a motor vehicle collision on Grove Street East in the City of Barrie.

The initial information received indicated that a mid-size pickup truck had driven into a driveway, struck the house and damaged a natural gas supply line. Upon arrival of the police, the details were confirmed and a minor evacuation of a few homes in the immediate area was underway.

When police spoke to the involved driver, obvious signs of impairment were observed and a 63-year-old female from Barrie was placed under arrest for impaired driving. She was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters but refused to participate in the investigation that followed.

The driver has been charged with Operation while Impaired, Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. She was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on June 17, 2024.

The residents who were forced to leave their homes while the gas leak was repaired were able to return just after 11:00 p.m. and the driver responsible for causing the chaos on Grove Street East has had her driver’s licence has been suspended for 90-days and her motor vehicle was impounded for 7-days in accordance with the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension Program.
