On Sunday, March 19, 2023, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Barrie Police was advised of a  suspected impaired driver that was operating a motor vehicle on Dunlop Street. The vehicle was initially observed travelling in Springwater Township and was followed by a concerned citizen and a passenger, who was providing police with updated information as they approached and entered the city of Barrie.

The citizen was able to safely get the car stopped and removed the keys from the ignition while police responded. Upon arrival, police were able to confirm that the driver of the motor vehicle was impaired and the 21-year-old female from Woodbridge, Ontario, was arrested for impaired driving.

The investigation continued at Barrie Police Headquarters where a qualified breathalyzer technician assisted with obtaining breath samples from the driver. It was at this time that it was confirmed that the driver was impaired by alcohol and well over three times the legal limit.

The accused was released from custody after being formally charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus) and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 12, 2023. The motor vehicle she was operating was impounded for 7-days and her driver’s licence was suspended for 90-days, under the authority of the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.

Barrie Police wish to thank the concerned citizens who acted in a manner that no doubt prevented a serious motor vehicle collision from taking place. It is actions such as these that involve impaired drivers that police feel are worth acknowledging as they contribute significantly to making our roads safer for everyone who uses them.
