On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, shortly after 2:30 p.m., the Barrie Police Service was notified of a landlord tenant dispute involving a rental property located in southwest Barrie.

When the tenant returned home and found the temperature in the house to be cold, they very quickly discovered that there was no power and that the gas supply had been turned off and locked. It was then that police were notified.

From the investigation that followed, the investigating officer determined that the landlord, who lawfully owns the property in question, showed up unannounced and without formal notification earlier in the afternoon, and entered the rental property with the assistance of a handyman. Once inside, all the utilities (water, gas and electricity) were rendered unusable.

The landlord showed up while police were conducting the investigation and was advised that the action earlier taken was unlawful and that the utilities needed to be reinstated immediately. The landlord refused and as a result, a 37-year-old female from East Gwillimbury, was arrested and charged with Break and Enter and Mischief – Obstruct, interrupt or interfere with the lawful use, enjoyment of property.

The accused was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued. She was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on March 18, 2024.
