On Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10:50 a.m., the Barrie Police Service was notified of a male dressed in military style clothing who was observed carrying a firearm. Additional information provided by the caller indicated that the male had just boarded a city transit bus at the Bus Terminal located at 24 Maple Avenue.

Upon arrival at the Terminal, a number of police units that responded began to search the buses that were taking on passengers and awaiting departure for their designated routes. A male who fit the provided description was located on a bus and was arrested without incident after a firearm was located in a jacket. A further search by police resulted in a number of knives and blades being seized.

The male, a 65-year-old male of no fixed address, was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued and police determined that the firearm, was a pellet style gun.

As a result, the accused has been charged with:

  • Careless Use of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Carry Concealed Weapon
  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition, contrary to a Prohibition Order
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm.

He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on April 24, 2024.
