Message from Barrie Police Chief Kimberley Greenwood:

"On Friday June 22, 2018 the Barrie Police Service was involved in an incident with a 32 year old male in downtown Barrie. The male was arrested and then transported to the Barrie Police Service custody facility for processing. Shortly after arrival the male went into medical distress. Officers immediately commenced first aid and contacted the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services who continued medical response and transported the male to Royal Victoria Regional Health Center. A short time later the male was pronounced deceased.

This was a very tragic incident, one which touches family, friends and our community.

In accordance with legislative requirements, the Barrie Police Service contacted the Special Investigations Unit who invoked their mandate and is the independent investigating agency. I recognize that this tragic incident is difficult for our community. Legislation prevents The Barrie Police Service from speaking to the event or circumstances leading up to the incident.

I can tell you that The Barrie Police Service is fully cooperating with the Special Investigations Unit and will continue to do so. The Barrie Police Service has the utmost trust and confidence in the Special Investigations Unit to conduct a thorough, timely and complete investigation.

Any inquiries should be directed to the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800 -787-8529.

I leave you with this; the Barrie Police Service remains Committed to our Community and will continue to deliver Service Excellence."
