Human Remains Discovered - Remains Positively Identified

(ORO-MEDONTE TOWNSHIP, ON) – On Tuesday February 27, 2018, shortly before 8:00 a.m.,  officers from the Barrie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended the Heritage Hills Golf Club located at 367 Line 1 South in Oro-Medonte Township after a group of hunters located what were believed to be human remains.

Upon arrival at the scene, police were able to confirm that the remains were human. However, due to buildup of snow and ice in the area, a controlled process was required to slowly thaw out the underlying ground and melt the snow with an enclosed tent and portable heaters.

Since that time, the Barrie-Orillia OPP Crime Unit has worked very closely with the detectives from the Barrie Police Service (BPS) Homicide Unit in order to identify the deceased.

The ongoing police investigation has continued and on Friday March 2, 2018, a Forensic Anthropologist attended the scene and coordinated the removal of the remains which were then transported to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC- OFPS) for a forensic post mortem examination.

The post mortem examination has been conducted and the remains have been positively identified as belonging to 72-year old Madelaine (Mandy) Thompson of Barrie, Ontario.

Mandy Thompson was reported missing to the Barrie Police Service on Friday February 3, 2017 and was the subject of an extensive and exhaustive search for a number of weeks following her disappearance that included resources from both the Barrie Police Service and the OPP.

The Barrie Police Service and the OPP wish to thank the public for their continued support and ongoing assistance while these investigations were carried out.
