On Friday, July 21, 2023, at 10:15 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Big Bay Point Road and Leggott Avenue involving a pedestrian who had been struck by a westbound motor vehicle.
Upon arrival at the scene, the pedestrian was located and pronounced deceased. Members of the Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit commenced the investigation which resulted in the closure of Big Bay Point Road between Huronia Road and Leggott Avenue until just before 4:00 a.m.
The police investigation has determined that the pedestrian, who is a 19-year-old international student, was crossing from the southside of Big Bay Point Road to a plaza located on the northside when he was struck by the westbound motor vehicle.
The involved motor vehicle was located a short distance away at a plaza located on the southeast corner of Huronia and Big Bay Point Roads where it caught fire. The driver, a 19-year-old male from Barrie, was arrested at the scene and is charged with Dangerous Operation Causing Death and Failure to Stop after Accident Causing Death. He was held for a bail hearing and was released from custody on Saturday afternoon. Due to a court-imposed publication ban, the identity of the driver cannot be released.
The circumstances which resulted in the death of the pedestrian continue to be the focus of the ongoing investigation and police are requesting the assistance of the public. Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dash camera video and were travelling on Big Bay Point Road on Friday evening prior to 10:15 p.m. to please contact the investigating officer.
