Last night, just after 6:30 p.m., Barrie Police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver that left the scene of a collision on James St. and Elizabeth St. in the city of Barrie. Initial information included that a parked motor vehicle had been struck on James St.

Police located the involved motor vehicle in the intersection of Patterson Place and Crawford St. and quickly determined that the driver was not impaired. Responding officers did however recognize the driver as being an outstanding suspect in a theft of meat from a Bayfield St. grocery store on April 12, 2023.

The male, a 59-year-old resident of Barrie, was taken into custody and just prior to that, as he was trying to locate documents for his motor vehicle, a small quantity of suspected crack cocaine was located in his wallet.

The driver was charged with Theft Under $5000, Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on June 14, 2023.
