Earlier this morning, just before 12:30 a.m., a uniform member of the Barrie Police Service was on general patrol in downtown area when the actions of the driver of a grey-coloured pick-up truck caught their attention. The actions would not have been hard to miss as the driver began to accelerate aggressively while stopped at the intersection of Dunlop and Toronto Streets, a maneuver that caused an intense odour of burned rubber and white smoke. The driver did this on two additional occasions and was stopped and investigated at Simcoe and Mulcaster Streets.

The driver exhibited obvious signs of impairment, was arrested and subsequently transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued. As a result, a 27-year old male from New Zealand has been charged criminally with Impaired Operation, Impaired Operation over .80mgs and Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt, under the Highway Traffic Act. He was remanded in custody for a bail hearing that was scheduled for today.
