This morning at 12:26 a.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service were monitoring traffic on Mapleview Drive West when a pickup truck travelling westbound was observed approaching their location at a high rate of speed. Utilizing a speed measuring device, the officers determined that the motor vehicle was being operated at 143km/h in a 60/h zone.
The officers were able to conduct a traffic stop at Mapleview Drive West at Essa Road and requested the driver to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device. The driver, a 30-year-old male from Thornton, Ontario refused to comply with the demand and was placed under arrest for failure/refusal to comply with demand, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
The driver was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on March 22, 2023. He was also charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt and Speeding 143km/h in a 60km/h zone (both are Highway Traffic Act offences).
In accordance with the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) program, the involved motor vehicle has been impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence of the now accused has been suspended for 90 days.
