Yesterday morning, at 6:59 a.m., the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of an insecure premises at a veterinary hospital located on Steel St. Upon arrival at the scene, police observed the front glass door had been smashed.

From the investigation that followed and aided by video surveillance, it was very quickly learned that a lone male suspect arrived at the hospital riding a bicycle at 2:24 a.m. Three minutes later, he was observed leaving the hospital carrying a safe and rode away on his bicycle. Video surveillance captured the entire incident and responding officers were able to identify the person responsible.

At 7:20 a.m., Barrie Police responded to a nearby residence located on Oakley Park Square where the homeowner awoke only to find the earlier stolen safe, open and discarded on her driveway.

During the day, Barrie Police officers kept a watchful eye for the suspect who was sought for the early morning break and enter.

At 8:15 p.m., officers on patrol in the area of Collier St. located a 43-year-old male of no fixed address who was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The accused was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where he was formally charged with Break and Enter, Mischief Under $5000, Theft under $5000 and Fail to Comply with a Probation Order. He has been held in custody for a bail hearing that is scheduled to take place today, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
