Between September 28, 2021, and January 28, 2022, the Barrie Police Service investigated the theft of 43 catalytic converters within the City of Barrie.

The investigation into these thefts was coordinated and conducted by members of the Barrie Police Street Crime Unit and when necessary, they were assisted by the Service’s Human Trafficking Unit.

Detectives quickly learned that these thefts were taking place primarily during the overnight hours and were consistent with other jurisdictions in Ontario who were experiencing similar occurrences.

Surveillance video from one of the thefts captured an image of a motor vehicle that was believed to be involved and through the course of the investigation, this helped to lead police to two suspects.

On Thursday February 10, 2022, a 47-year old male and 27-year old female, who both reside in Barrie, were arrested and were charged with a total of 51 criminal offences in regards to the catalytic converter thefts. Both were held in custody and appeared the following day for a bail hearing.
