On Monday, July 17, 2023, at 12:53 a.m., Barrie Police responded to a report of a violent altercation that had taken between a 58-year-old male from Oro-Medonte Township and reportedly upwards to four people at Meridian Place.
The victim sustained serious and life-threatening facial injuries as a result of the interaction and was taken to a local hospital. He was later transported by air ambulance to a Toronto area trauma centre and he remains there today where he continues to receive medical attention.
Detectives from the Barrie Police Service Criminal Investigation Division were greatly assisted by video surveillance coverage that captured the entire incident. As a result, it was initially reported that police were seeking three males and one female suspect in regard to this ongoing investigation.
Investigators were able to determine late Monday afternoon that there were two male suspects who were being sought for their involvement in this overnight incident and that the female was likely a witness. A third male was determined to have not been involved in the confrontation.
Yesterday morning, uniform officers from the Barrie Police Service, located and arrested without incident, two 18-year-old males at a central Barrie residence. These males were transported to Barrie Police Headquarters shortly after 10:00 a.m. and have both been charged with aggravated assault.
The accused males were remanded into custody late yesterday afternoon. One of the males is scheduled to appear by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie for a bail hearing today and the other is scheduled to appear by video tomorrow.
