On Friday, October 20, 2023, at 10:33 p.m., an officer from the Barrie Police Service stopped a motor vehicle on Ferndale Drive, south of Dunlop Street. The driver exhibited signs of impairment and when given an Alcohol Screening Device, registered a fail.

The 62-year-old male from Oro-Medonte Township was arrested for Drive over .80mgs and was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters for a breath test. Upon completion of the required testing, it was confirmed that the driver was not over the legal limit of .80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

Prior to attending Headquarters, the male driver’s motor vehicle was searched, and 66 cartons of unmarked cigarettes were located. The cartons were valued at approximately $4000 and in total, represented 132000 cigarettes.

The accused was later released from custody and has been charged with Operation while impaired – alcohol, Possess Unmarked Cigarettes and Transport Unmarked Cigarettes in Bulk – No Registration Certificate (the last two charges are contrary to the Tobacco Tax Act) and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on December 4, 2023.
