On Friday, March 24, 2023, at 6:17 p.m., Barrie Police responded to a report of a Barrie Transit operator being assaulted by a passenger who also damaged the bus.

Police responded to the area of Essa and Burton Roads where the Transit operator explained what had just taken place and that the suspect had exited the bus and was last seen walking down Bradford Street. A 19-year-old male of no fixed address was located a short distance away and when taken into custody, kicked one of the arresting officers. None of the involved persons sustained serious injuries and the damage done to the bus is repairable (broken rear exit door window and plexi-glass divider in driver’s seat area).

The male was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued and he was charged with Assault, Mischief Under $5000, Utter Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Assault Police and Breach Youth Sentence Order.

While at Headquarters, an outstanding Bench Warrant for Assault, held by the Barrie Police Service, was also found to be in place, and as a result, the accused was held pending a bail hearing that took place on Saturday. The video appearance resulted in the male being released from custody on a Release Order, with conditions, that also requires him to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 17, 2023.
