On Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 7:47 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a weapons call at a retail store located at 509 Bayfield St. in the City of Barrie.

Police were provided with a very detailed description of a male who had just pointed a revolver style handgun at a ride share provider and were able to locate him within minutes of receiving the call. At 7:57 p.m., a 40-year-old male was taken into custody without incident and police were in possession of the involved firearm.

The accused male was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division assisted the responding officers with the ongoing investigation.

Police have determined that this isolated incident focused on the return of some property that was found in the ride share car and an attempt by the driver to return it to the rightful owner. Unfortunately, the good intentions of the driver were met with an accusation of theft and concluded when the accused removed a large handgun from a bag and pointed it in a threatening manner at the driver.

The firearm has been determined to be a paintball style revolver that was modified to carry ammunition capable of causing serious injury or death. As a result, the accused male has been charged with:

– Assault with a Weapon
– Pointing a Firearm
– Utter Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
– Carry Concealed Weapon
– Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

The accused remains in custody and is being held for a bail hearing that is expected to take place this afternoon, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
