On Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 12:43 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision that had occurred on Red Maple Lane in the City of Barrie.

Upon arrival, police learned that a 23-month-old male had been struck by a recycling truck. The young child was transported to a local hospital and later flown by Air Ornge to a Toronto area trauma centre where he was treated for life threatening injuries.

The subsequent police investigation was conducted by the Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit, who were assisted by the members of the Forensic Identification Unit and officers who were assigned to the dayshift.

Overnight, police learned that the child succumbed to injuries that were sustained from the collision.

The investigation into this traffic fatality remains ongoing and updates will only be provided as the investigation permits.
